BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 23, 2022) – Ole Miss’ Mario Garcia Romo and Kentucky’s Abby Steiner have been named the SEC Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year by a vote of the league head coaches.

Garcia Romo holds a 3.58 grade point average and is a senior majoring in chemistry. He is a six-time U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honoree. He is ranked second in the NCAA in the mile (3:53.36) and he was the lone collegian in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the 114th Millrose Games, where he finished sixth overall amid a field of professionals and Olympians. Garcia Romo set the school record in the 1000-meter at the Vanderbilt Invitational at 2:20.12, making him the 10th-best in NCAA history.

Steiner holds a 3.802 grade point average and is a senior majoring in kinesiology (exercise science) with a minor in psychology. She is a CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree and has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Steiner is ranked first nationally in the 200m (22:37), tied for first in the 60m (7.12), and she is a member of the NCAA-leading 4x400m relay (3:27.27). She set a new collegiate record in the 200m and set a school record in the 60m. The Wildcats’ 4x400m relay was the fourth-fastest in collegiate history.

The 2022 SEC Championships will take place Friday and Saturday in College Station, Texas.
