Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced harsh sanctions on Russia’s economy and technology. These sanctions are seen as punishment for Russia, as they attacked Ukraine.
In his speech, Biden called out President Putin as the aggressor. “Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will bear the consequences,” Biden said. While speaking, Biden announced steps that will “impose severe cost on the Russian economy, both immediately and over time.” Biden also announced the sanctions on four banks and “corrupt billionaires” along with their families.
During the President’s speech, he also announced ground and air forces to NATO’s eastern flank, while saying our forces won’t engage in conflict, CNN reports. “Our forces are not and will not be engaged in the conflict,” he said. “Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine but defend our NATO allies and reassure those allies in the east.”
President Biden also said that the actions of Putin would “end up costing Russia dearly, economically and strategically.”
As you know, Russia invaded Ukraine, according to NATO. This came shortly after Putin announced that he “decided to conduct a special military operation” said to protect the eastern region of Donbas in Ukraine.
Though Putin previously stated his plans were not to include an occupation of Ukraine, CBS News correspondents also reported hearing “loud blasts” in the capital city, Kyiv, and in the eastern city of Kharkiv, CBS News also reported.
The invasion comes days “after Putin recognized the self-declared “People’s Republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk, in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, as independent, sending shockwaves across the globe and a new round of sanctions from the West. Putin also ordered Russian forces into the breakaway region for what he called ‘peacekeeping functions,’” CBS News also reported.
