Patrick Stewart Says Professor X Would Be Cautious Of Doctor Strange

Patrick Stewart hints the X-Men’s Professor X would be “cautious” of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – does he have reason to fear him?

According to Patrick Stewart, the X-Men‘s Professor X would be deeply suspicious should he encounter Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The multiverse lies at the heart of the MCU’s Phase 4 slate, offering an opportunity for superhero team-ups on a previously unimagined scale. Already that potential has been realized in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Tom Holland’s Peter Parker working alongside Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s. But Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promises to be even more spectacular.

The Super Bowl trailer for Doctor Strange 2 featured a very familiar voice – that of Patrick Stewart, presumably playing Professor X once again. Stewart initially avoided commenting, insisting the voice wasn’t his, but little by little he’s breaking under sustained questioning, well aware fans are thrilled at the prospect of seeing him reprise the role of Charles Xavier in an MCU movie. In one recent interview, he’s all but confirmed that was indeed his voice – and even hinted how Professor X would react to Doctor Strange.

Speaking in an interview with Jake’s Takes, Stewart answered a hypothetical question on Professor X’s attitude to Doctor Strange. “Professor X would be extraordinarily cautious, and watchful, and perhaps feel a little insecure,” Stewart observed, “because there is something that is… potentially dangerous about this man, and I think that would put Professor Xavier on guard.” It’s an interesting comment, because it dovetails well with the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, in which Strange was arrested and brought before what seemed to be Xavier and other unseen allies.

Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier Professor X in Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness

The trailers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have avoided confirming just who the villain really is. They’ve shown shots of the Elder God Shuma-Gorath – confirmed to be renamed Gargantos in the MCU, because Marvel don’t have the rights to the name “Shuma-Gorath” – but this monstrous being hasn’t really seemed threatening enough in the various shots. Others have pointed to hints Scarlet Witch could be the villain, having gone rogue after the events of WandaVision – likely because she’s been reading the fabled book of dark magic called the Darkhold. But there have also been ominous hints Doctor Strange himself is the threat, with one TV spot apparently showing someone wearing the Cloak of Levitation bombarding the Sanctum Sanctorum. Stewart’s comment supports the theory Stephen Strange is the true cause of the multiverse of madness.

If this is the case, then Professor X’s encounter with Doctor Strange may not go well. Ominously, during the same interview Stewart explicitly compared his other iconic character, Jean-Luc Picard, to Charles Xavier – and noted that, unlike the Professor, Picard would never die. He may have been alluding to Professor X’s death in Logan, but his words felt a little too familiar – as though reflecting on something a lot more recent. It’s possible the X-Men‘s Professor X would be wise to fear the possible Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
