Black Adam star Quintessa Swindell teases the movie’s unique take on the lesser-known DC Comics hero, Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone. Dwayne Johnson is finally making his DCEU debut this fall, after several years of Black Adam being stuck in development hell. Despite being known as Shazam’s major villain in the comics, the DCEU incarnation of Black Adam is being re-imagined as an anti-hero, with Black Adam set to explore Teth-Adam’s grim origin story.
While Black Adam will not see himself as the enemy in the film, Johnson’s character will, by default, be viewed as a villain to some new DC superheroes that are joining the DCEU. Black Adam won’t just be the big-screen debut for the titular character, but also the Golden Age team known as the Justice Society of America. The Justice Society, which pre-dates the Justice League, will feature some beloved members from the comics, from Hawkman and Doctor Fate, to Cyclone and Atom Smasher. In Black Adam, Maxine Hunkel a.k.a. Cyclone, will be portrayed by Swindell, who will be the first actor to bring the Justice Society of America member to life in live-action.
Swindell, who is playing one of the JSA’s two newest members alongside Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher, was present at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con with their fellow co-stars to promote Black Adam. During the press line that Screen Rant attended, the non-binary star spoke about bringing Cyclone from panel to screen in the DCEU film. When Swindell was asked about how Black Adam will handle Cyclone’s live-action debut, they spoke about how the creative team made each JSA member “unique.” As Cyclone is one of the lesser-known members of the Justice Society, it gave Black Adam some freedom to re-imagine Maxine.
“Everyone wanted the character to be unique and really special, and not something we had really seen on the screen before. Embodying that, and also being trusted enough to shape the character and bring new elements to the character was just really awesome. There’s a lot of pulls from the comics, obviously, but there’s a lot of stuff that’s just our spin on it. Jaume’s vision for it and our producers’ vision was just incredible.”
Based on Swindell’s comments, it seems that audiences can expect Black Adam‘s Cyclone to draw heavily from the character’s comic book arc, which teases some of the movie’s storyline. In the comics, Maxine came into the JSA through her grandmother Abigail ‘Ma’ Hunkel, the original Red Tornado. So far, there have been no signs of Cyclone’s grandmother being in Black Adam, but that might be saved as a surprise for when the movie hits theaters this fall. Maxine is also infused with nanobytes at the hand of T.O. Morrow, causing her to receive powerful wind manipulation abilities. While these powers were seen in the latest Black Adam trailer, Swindell’s comments also tease that there are plenty of new elements to the character that viewers won’t expect.
So far, it’s unclear if her DCEU counterpart will stick to Maxine’s backstory, though Black Adam has established that Swindell’s Cyclone will be a metahuman. Since Cyclone hasn’t been used in any other DC media prior to Black Adam, the DCEU can bring its own spin on the hero in live-action without considering past iterations, unlike Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Doctor Fate. Depending on how Black Adam performs at the box office, this could just be the start of Swindell’s “unique” Cyclone and the other JSA members, who may go on to star in their own DC spinoff projects. Before that can happen, Cyclone and the rest of the Justice Society need to tackle Johnson’s anti-hero in Black Adam later this year.
